Extractions & Wisdom Teeth, Winnipeg Dentist

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. At Lakewood Dental Centre, our dentists recommend extractions only when less invasive treatments wouldn't be effective or when keeping the tooth could compromise your oral health.

There are several reasons a tooth may need to be removed. Common reasons include severe decay, extensive damage, infection, or when wisdom teeth cannot erupt properly.

Certain conditions, such as injury, advanced gum disease, or extensive decay, may make extraction the best option to restore optimal oral health. Teeth may also be extracted to prepare the mouth for other dental treatments.

If an extraction is necessary, your dentist will review tooth replacement options with you, which can include dental bridges, implants, or dentures, to help restore function and maintain the appearance of your smile.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that usually appear in the back of the mouth between the ages of 17 and 25.

While some people have enough space for them to come in normally, wisdom teeth often cause problems because they can crowd existing teeth, become impacted, or make it harder to maintain proper oral hygiene.

When these issues arise, your dentist may recommend removing all wisdom teeth to protect your overall oral health and prevent future complications.

The Process of Getting a Tooth Removed

The process begins with your dentist evaluating your tooth and overall oral health to determine the best approach.

Depending on the complexity of the extraction, your dentist may simply remove the tooth or, in cases where the tooth is trapped below the gumline, your dentist may need to perform a minor surgical procedure to access it.

Either way, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area beforehand so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

After the tooth is removed, your dentist will provide instructions to help manage healing, reduce discomfort, and prevent complications.
