Unsure if you are experiencing a dental emergency? See below for a list of common urgent dental issues and how to handle them. Call our dental clinic so we can schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Lost Fillings or Crowns
If you’ve lost or broken a filling or crown, the first step is to locate any pieces that may have come loose. Rinse your mouth to keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side to prevent further damage.
Call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment so your dentist can repair or replace the filling or crown.
If the tooth feels sharp or sensitive, dental wax from a pharmacy can help protect the area until your appointment.
-
Chipped or Broken Teeth
If you have a chipped or broken tooth, try to locate any pieces that have come off and place them in a clean container to bring with you to your appointment. Your dentist may be able to reattach them!
Even if you can’t find the missing piece, it’s important to call our office as soon as possible. We can assess the damage and recommend the best way to repair or restore your tooth.
While waiting to be seen by your dentist, avoid chewing on the affected side and rinse gently with warm water to keep the area clean.

Knocked-Out Teeth
If a tooth has been knocked out, try to locate it and handle it carefully by the crown (the part you normally see above the gum line), avoiding the roots. If possible, gently place the tooth back into its socket and bite down lightly to hold it in place. If reinserting it isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a glass of milk or holding it in your mouth until you can get to our office.
To help reduce pain and swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek where the tooth was knocked out.
Call our office and come in as soon as possible. Prompt care gives your dentist a better chance to assess the situation and determine next steps.

Swelling, Pain or Discomfort
If you notice sudden moderate to severe swelling in your face, mouth, or neck, or are experiencing intense pain or discomfort in or around your mouth, it’s important to call us as soon as possible.
In the meantime, you can help ease the discomfort by applying a cold compress to the affected area, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, and gently rinsing your mouth with salt water to remove any debris that may be contributing to the pain.
Once you arrive, our dentists will examine the area, determine the cause of your discomfort, and recommend treatment to address the problem quickly and efficiently.
